The Lowdown: What’s Next for Legislative Advocacy in New York
As New York’s social justice advocates prepare for the 2024 legislative session, they are grappling with an increasingly reactionary political climate where even progressive elected officials are shifting to the right due to concerns over rising crime and the migrant crisis. This is concerning as a healthy democracy requires a shift in government power and resources from the most privileged elite to those communities historically marginalized by the political status quo. As such, it is especially urgent for funders to invest in legislative advocacy work so that movement leaders can continue the fight for crucial legislative reforms that will improve the lives of many New Yorkers and strengthen our democracy.
During our virtual funder briefing you will learn about the obstacles and opportunities facing social justice organizations across the state, the overall political landscape in New York City and Albany in 2023 and 2024, and how the Advocacy Institute is poised to support legislative advocacy work going forward.
